The Pentagon Gave Two Companies $21 Billion in AI Contracts. Then Blacklisted Their Shared AI Supplier.

In a single month, the Department of Defense committed $21 billion to AI-enabled weapons and intelligence systems built by Palantir and Anduril. It simultaneously banned Anthropic, the foundation model provider embedded in Palantir's core military software. Total identified AI contract value flowing through systems that depend on foundation models from commercial providers: over $21 billion. Software engineers will point out that model abstraction is a solved problem. LangChain, custom middleware, and API-compatible wrappers exist specifically to swap one model for another. Palantir's forced migration away from Claude, while expensive, proves the system is flexible rather than fragile. If you can rip out a model in six months, the dependency is manageable.

This argument has real merit. Palantir is not going to collapse because Anthropic got blacklisted. Its $350 billion market cap reflects investor confidence that the migration will succeed.
