Background

If 10% of this fleet were grid-connected at any time via bidirectional chargers, the available power capacity would be approximately 28 GW (at 10 kW per vehicle), comparable to the output of 28 nuclear reactors.

Existing vehicle-to-grid (V2G) research and patents focus on energy arbitrage (charge low, discharge high) and demand response (shift charging times). These operate on timescales of minutes to hours. Synthetic inertia requires response on the order of milliseconds. Relevant prior art includes:

Detailed Description

1. Three-Tier Control Architecture

The system operates across three hierarchical tiers with decreasing response latency at each lower tier:

Tier 1 — Vehicle-Level Inverter Control (response: < 20 ms): Each bidirectional charger contains a programmable inverter with a local frequency measurement unit (PMU-equivalent) sampling grid voltage at 10 kHz. The inverter implements a virtual synchronous machine (VSM) droop characteristic: when measured frequency drops below nominal (60.000 Hz in North America), the inverter injects active power proportional to the frequency deviation, mimicking the inertial response of a spinning generator. 2. Predictive Frequency Deviation Model

A method for maintaining grid frequency stability using distributed electric vehicle batteries, comprising: continuously measuring grid frequency at each bidirectional charger; injecting active power proportional to frequency deviation using a virtual synchronous machine droop characteristic; coordinating power injection across a fleet of vehicles via a regional aggregator that respects individual vehicle constraints; and predictively pre-positioning fleet power allocations using a machine learning model trained on historical grid frequency data and generation schedules.
