Every Sabbath Mode Is Broken. The Fix Was Described in Tractate Shabbat 120b.

What It Would Take

No AI agent today is certified by any halachic authority for Shabbat use, and Zomet spent decades building relationships with poskim before their first product shipped. Any serious implementation would require the same โ€” probably starting with a partnership between an AI platform and an established institute like Zomet, the Star-K, or the OU's kosher technology department (which has been developing smart appliance solutions with GE and ZMAN Technologies for years). The agent's decision logic would need to be transparent, auditable, and conservative โ€” defaulting to inaction when uncertain, because an unnecessary prohibition is always preferable to an accidental violation.

The market is real, and its shape is already visible. Roughly two million Haredi Jews worldwide observe Shabbat strictly every week โ€” a population larger than metropolitan Austin โ€” with millions more Modern Orthodox and traditional Jews observing periodically. That is a weekly compliance event affecting more households than any other recurring religious obligation that intersects with home automation. Sabbath mode, as currently implemented across hundreds of appliances, is a band-aid. A subtractive hack that disables features to prevent halachic problems, works for individual appliances in isolation, and collapses entirely in a connected home where every device, sensor, thermostat, motion detector, and automation rule could potentially implicate the user in melakha through invisible chains of cause and effect that no pre-Shabbat checklist can fully anticipate. An autonomous AI agent inverts the paradigm entirely: instead of making each device dumber, it makes the orchestration layer smarter, maintaining the home without the user exercising creative agency at all.

The Talmud did not anticipate AI agents. But it built the conceptual scaffolding. Grama โ€” indirect causation โ€” was the first acknowledgment that the agent of an action matters as much as the action itself. Automated systems at Sde Eliyahu extended the principle to machines that act without human initiation.
